Deprivation of Medical Care for Sunni Prisoner Hossein Salami in Sheiban Prison

Hossein Salami, a Sunni citizen and prisoner of conscience held in Sheiban Prison in occupied Ahwaz, has been deprived of medical care due to inadequate treatment services at the prison’s infirmary as of Saturday, June 29, 2024.

A knowledgeable source stated that Hossein Salami suffers from cardiovascular disease and has been sent to the prison infirmary multiple times. However, due to the limited medical equipment and the absence of a specialist cardiologist, he has been repeatedly returned to the general prison ward. According to the general physician at the infirmary, Hossein Salami needs to be sent to a hospital for specialized treatment, but the prosecutor of Ahwaz and the security officer handling his case have opposed this.

The source also mentioned that Hossein Salami suffers from other ailments, including various infections, digestive disorders, multiple sclerosis, tooth decay, sinusitis, diabetes, prostate issues, and intestinal hernia, yet he is deprived of his right to medical treatment.

It is noteworthy that Hossein Salami was arrested in January 2023 by so-called security forces in occupied Ahwaz. After being transferred to the central detention center in Ahwaz, he was subjected to various forms of torture and harsh treatment. Following the charges against him, he was transferred to Ward 8 of Sheiban Prison in Ahwaz.

These human rights violations, including the denial of a fair trial, access to legal counsel, and medical services, contravene Articles 2, 18, and 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 18 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Additionally, arbitrary detention and keeping the accused in uncertainty violate Article 9 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

Prisoners in occupying Iran face widespread human rights abuses, including deprivation of fair trials, physical and mental illnesses due to prison conditions, and extensive case fabrications used as leverage to suppress and intimidate political and security prisoners.

Hossein Bouazar originates from Ahwaz and stands as a fervent champion for human rights. Deeply connected to his Ahwazi Arab heritage, his literary works illuminate the adversities faced by this community. An outspoken critic of the Iranian regime, Hossein bravely highlights the grave human rights violations inflicted upon the Ahwazi Arabs. Through his compelling narratives, he seeks to amplify international consciousness of the challenges the Ahwazi Arabs encounter. His prose resonates as a defiant call for a world that upholds the inherent rights of every individual, irrespective of their ethnic roots or background.
